Why we are building Dream Builders Foundation
An introduction to the mission, four programs and roadmap of a community project in formation — and why we chose to begin with transparency.
Illustrative photoEvery project begins with a question. Ours was: "If a child is born in a remote village, hours on foot from the nearest town, do they have the same chance to learn as a child born in a city?" The honest answer is: not yet.
It is not for lack of will — we have met teachers who have served in mountain villages for over a decade, parents who save every coin for books, students who wade across streams each morning. It is because of small, recurring barriers that pile up year after year.
Four barriers, four programs
We designed four programs to address four specific groups of barriers. Dream Essentials for the basics: books, notebooks, backpacks, uniforms. Dream Digital for the digital divide: computers, connectivity, technology skills. Dream Schools for the learning environment: safe classrooms, libraries, clean water. And Dream Learning for the long term: a completely free online learning platform.
The order is deliberate. We start with what is most practical and least bureaucratic, learning how to do things well before taking on bigger ones.
Why start with transparency
Many people ask why we published a website before any activity has taken place. The reason is that we want everyone — schools, parents, volunteers, future donors — to understand exactly where we stand. The project has no licence. It accepts no donations. It has no track record. This website is a promise about how we will work, not a report of achievements.
Trust does not begin with impressive numbers. It begins with telling the truth even when there is nothing to show off.
What you can do today
If you are a teacher, tell us what your classroom needs. If you work in technology, help us design the device-reuse process and the learning platform. If you run a business, think of the computers you are about to replace. And if you are simply interested, follow our roadmap and hold us to our word.
